PART 1        GENERAL

1.04        SUBMITTALS

 

     A.       Submit the following in accordance with Section 01300:

               1.       Product Data:  Manufacturer's material description and fabrication methods.

               2.       Shop Drawings

               3.       Samples:  One full size sign including insert in colors specified and graphics scheduled.

 

1.05        QUALITY ASSURANCE

 

     A.       Manufacturer's Qualifications:

               1.       Company with not less than 5 successive years experience in the manufacture of interior building signs.  Bidder must perform the actual manufacturing and cannot subcontract the job out to another manufacturer.

               2.       Furnish a list of at least 3 signage projects completed in the previous 2 years.

 

1.06        DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

 

     A.       Deliver signs to the project site (or requested destination). Signs must be boxed and have

               protective wrap to prevent damage during delivery and storage.  Store signs in dry area

               protected from the elements.


PART 2        PRODUCTS

 

2.01        MANUFACTURERS/FABRICATORS

 

     A.       Standard of Quality: 4Sign Solutions manufacturing process is the ¡°Standard of Quality¡± for everything except Braille dots; manufacturers licensed to use this process need not obtain substitution approval prior to bid, but must furnish a letter certifying that they are providing New Hermes, Inc. patented products.

 

     B.      Acceptable Fabricators: Subject to compliance with requirements, acceptable fabricators                                     and products are:

               1.  4Sign Solutions (1800-333-2927)                  

2.      Best Manufacturing (1800-235-2378)

3.      ASI Sign Systems

4.      Andco Industries

5.      Spanjer Brothers

6.      Or Equivilent

 

     C.      All other manufacturers/fabricators seeking approval of their products must comply with requirements of the Instructions to Bidders (AIA Document A701, Paragraph 3.3) prior to bidding.  Substitutions of materials or method of manufacture allowed without prior approval from sign consultant and client.

 

2.02        SIGN SYSTEM

 

     A.       1-4 ply modified acrylic sign depending on standard style or window with insert.

    

 

2.03        MATERIALS/COMPONENTS/DESIGN

 

     A.       Signs

 

               1.      Types:                                     

 

a.      INLAY:  Gravo-Tac¢ç1-ply, 3-piece construction, modified acrylic sign material consisting of two 1-ply 1/32 inch thick Gravo-Tac¢ç (same color) bonded together, with 1/16 inch profile material to create tactile copy and graphics.

 

b.      Supply guarantee for profile and Braille abuse of 5 years

 

 

               2.       Finishes and Colors:  Acrylic, matte finish, ADA compliant for color contrast and surface finish.  Project sign schedules for specific information on colors will be selected by architect/owner

 

              

3.            Graphics

 

                        a.       Tactile Type:  RLS System using Acrylic, computer engineered, chemically welded, embedded raised graphics, complying with ADA, Sections 4.30.3, 4.30.4 and 4.30.5.

 

                        b.       Pictograms:  All ¡°symbols¡± must match as closely as possible the published                                                          ¡°international¡± symbols.  Other interpretations will not be deemed acceptable.                                               All symbols must be approved prior to fabrication.

 

                        c.       Braille:  Use drill and press-fit method for placing Braille dots on architectural signs; computer engineered, using special carbide engraving bit, press-fit tool with vacuum pump, and UV stable acrylic Rasters¢ç. 

 

                        d.       Design: (refer to drawings)

                                  1)       Character and Number Height:  5/8 inch minimum, 2 inch maximum, except when otherwise needed to meet requirements of ADA Section 4.30.3.

                                  2)       Character and Number Depth:  Raised minimum 1/32 inch.

                                  3)       Copy Style:  Upper case, sans serif. 

                                  4)       Braille: Grade 2 (conforming to Specifications #800, National Library Service, Library of Congress), rounded or domed, 0.019 inch to 0.025 inch high, to allow smooth tactile sweep of the fingers, from left to right. Braille dots should be of uniform depth.  Background surface to be smooth without ridges or other intrusions that will interfere with the ability to read the dots.  Raised elements, such as borders, shall be separated a minimum of 3/8 inch from the Braille dot cell groups. This clearance dimension is to be applied to the depression caused by a routed, or similar Braille fabrication system, to the distance of the border to tactile characters, or from dots to tactile characters in an acrylic dot type system.  A clear cell may be inserted at the beginning and end of a row to set the left and right border spacing in lieu of 3/8 inch.  Maintain one of the following configurations for dot/cell measurement:

                                  5)       Braille Message:  All messages to be lower case, and may not directly                                                                   reflect the style of the tactile letters.

 

                                  6)       The Braille area is to be located below the corresponding tactile text.  On directional signs displaying more than one directive, braille should be placed below each directive.  On signs other than directional signs, if the tactile print message is multi-lined and expresses a phrase, the entire Braille text should be grouped together below the print message.  

 

              7)    In alpha/numeric format, if tactile print reads A324B, in braille, text should be written: / capital sign/letter/number sign/numerals/letter sign/capital sign/letter. Do not use double capital sign /dot 6/dot 6/.

 

                                  8)       If tactile message is:    ¬  (arrow)

                                           In braille, text should be written:  /¡±ar¡±/r/¡±ow¡±/space/l/e/f/t/.    

 

               4.       Engraving Process:  Tactile signage shall be profile engraved in accordance with

                         the manufacturer¡¯s instructions.

 

                        a.       Inlay Method:  After 2-ply substrate has been bonded together and cut to size, cut inline text/graphics through top ply and weed immediately.  Cut outline text/graphics from the 1/16 inch profile material and adhere text/graphics to the substrate with Gravo-Bond.

 

               5.       Sign Insert to be slid into window opening for ease of sign changeover.

                       

a.             Sign inserts are to be made of:

i.                stock paper for ease to customer change over

ii.              1/32¡± gravoply acrylic with engraved copy

 

6.      Copy Window Signs:  Manufacture by attaching front piece of 1/32 inch color acrylic material with adhesive to one piece of 1/32 inch clear acrylic material with no adhesive.  Assemble inside frame for alignment purposes.  Cut a rectangular window out of the front piece and weed out.  Apply the profile material and engrave copy/graphics.  Then apply strips of 1/32 inch double-sided adhesive tape 1/8 inch away from the top and bottom of the window opening as well as at other areas on the sign deemed necessary to adhere the front piece to the color back piece.  Paper insert nameplate should move smoothly when assembled.

                       

                        a.       Manufacturer will supply owner with computer software and sample layouts for paper insert nameplates for copy window signs upon request.

 

2.04        SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL

 

     A.       PROOFREADING:  Vendors may obtain independent certification. Certified proofreaders may verify that the Braille is correct by review of the sign fabricators text proofs prior to fabrication, and/or, review of signs after fabrication. Proofreading will confirm that the braille segment is in accurate Grade 2 Braille that adheres to the guidelines and accurately reflects the intent of the communication for the braille reader.  Any sign found to be in error is to be replaced and proofread at no cost to the owner.

               1.       All signs may be proofread by a certified braille reader licensed by the Library of                                                Congress to read Grade 2 Braille. 

 

PART 3        EXECUTION

 

3.01        EXAMINATION

              

     A.       Examine the substrates and conditions under which the work is to be performed, and notify the Contractor in writing of conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the work. Do not proceed with the installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

 

3.02        INSTALLATION

 

     A.       Mount sign panels with double-coated acrylic, adhesive-backed foam tape, or with metal screws, or other appropriate hardware suitable to the substrate to which the frame will be mounted.  Mounting height to comply with ADA, Section 4.30.6, typically as follows:

               1.       40 inches from floor to centerline of sign for elementary schools

               2.       60 inches from floor to centerline of sign for all other buildings.

 

     B.      Where permanent identification is provided for rooms and spaces, signs shall be installed                          on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door.  Where there is no wall space to the                                latch side of the door, signs shall be placed on the nearest adjacent wall.  Mounting                                   location for such signage shall be so that a person may approach within 3 inches of                                  signage without encountering protruding objects or standing within the swing of the door.

 

3.03        SCHEDULE

 

     A.       Provide the following interior signs:  (see attached schedule)

 

1.      Type 1  -  8x8¡± room number 1¡± and ¨ú¡± room name

2.      Type 1A – 8x8¡± room number 1¡± and ¨ú¡± room name w/1 insert

3.      Type 2  -  8x8¡± restrooms 1¡± name

4.      Type 3  -  8x8¡± stairs 1¡± copy

5.      Type 4  -  12x12¡± evacuation map w/occupancy load

6.      Type 5  -  12x18 or 18x12¡± handicap accessible directionals
